Job Description

Senior Network Architect

The Senior Network Architect is a core member of a team that ensures that Distributel and its related entities have networks that provides high quality, cost effective and valuable services to both business and residential customers from coast to coast. The incumbent will provide their talents in design of IP/data networks that are reliable, cost effective and maintainable. Using their ability to help others understand technology and technical concepts, they will provide mentoring and support to other team members.


Work Performed


• Assess requirements, defining tasks and milestones to achieve objectives while ensuring the optimal use of resources to meet those objectives
• Making decisions and solving problems involving varied levels of complexity, ambiguity and risk
• Provide clear and meaningful updates and feedback to leadership at regular intervals
• Listening and communicating effectively with management and team members to foster open communication.
• Perform complex engineering and design with regards to IP and Data networks
• Be aware of costs structures for the solutions being worked with or designed. Inclusive of one-time, and regularly recurring
• Participate in the preparation and maintenance of the department capital budget
• Interface with vendors and providers of services as required to select or recommend appropriate technologies for deployment
• Create and manage platform roadmaps to manage the lifecycle of the solutions designed
• IP Transit and peering traffic engineering planning and design
• Interface with product management regularly with regard to business and residential product technical requirements and changes
• Assist in the troubleshooting of highly complex network problems and act as a high level escalation point for Network Operations
• Create processes and provide training in order to ensure appropriate network documentation is created and maintained
• Ensure Network Operations is sufficiently prepared to accept responsibility for new or changed network designs
• Assist other departments in the organization in working with the solutions you develop
• Work with internal and external contacts to understand current and future requirements and develop scalable, secure, reliable and cost efficient IP and Data network infrastructure design and operating solutions
• Keep abreast of industry developments and proactively propose protocol, technology, or vendor relationship changes that will reduce costs and improve network efficiency and effectiveness
• Work with the sales channel and product management to develop custom solutions for customers on an ad-hoc basis. Assist in turning recurring solutions into standard products
• Participate as a subject lead in major corporate projects
• Provide lightweight project management discipline to your own projects within the department
• Other duties as business needs dictate

Employee Requirements


Education, Training and Experience


• Bachelor of Science degree or College diploma in Computer Sciences or related field
• Acceptable combination of education and experience will be considered
• 10+ years’ experience in a service provider environment in a core network technical design, planning or operations role
• Juniper certification is considered an asset

• Thorough understanding of IP/Ethernet standards and technologies used in a service provider environment, such as: IPv4/IPv6, IS-IS, MPLS, MEF Standards for Carrier Ethernet
• In depth experience with BGP in a service provider environment


Additional Assets


• Familiarity with network management protocols such as SNMP, TL1, NETCONF
• Understanding of DSL and DOCSIS technologies
• Understanding of Systems Management competencies, i.e. Fault, Configuration, Auditing, Performance, and Security monitoring (FCAPS).
• Experience in working with Linux and other systems in a service provider environment
• Script development skills (Python, Perl, shell, etc)
